Audience Member: This question for Mr. Moffat. How are you going to keep doing the regenerations because, the Doctor is only supposed to have 12 and he's used them all up apart from that last one. Moffat: First of all, he can regenerate 12 times and that would mean there would be 13 Doctors. What we'll do in the event that we reach that point, and we've had 13 Doctors, there's this emergency BBC protocol. We will....make something up.

reblogged: As a note, there are two different ways that the Doctor can have more than 12 regenerations, as it was once explained to me. The less likely (that they will do) is that only having 12 regenerations is a social courtesy that the time lords used, perhaps because they are simply getting too old. The Doctor mentioned in Waters of Mars, I believe, that he has lived for too long. The Doctor, however, will not be able to stop because he is the last one, and feels obligated to continue running around the universe saving everything. The other is the one I like more, and it is that when a time lord kills another time lord, he gains all of their unused regenerations (of the 12). This explains, in particular, the Master, and why he keeps coming back. This works for the Doctor as well because he, essentially, killed his entire planet to defeat the Daleks, meaning that he received all of their regenerations, and thus the Doctor has all of the regenerations he will ever need.
